## Skyward Experimental Rocketry participates at Ad Infinitum

Skyward is pleased to announce that on  May 7th will attend the inauguration of the exhibition Ad Infinitum.

Ad Infinitum is the first artistic-cultural event of the 2016 review of Tablinum Cultural Management LUST for ART.

The exhibition sims to present through the works of Giorgio Tardonato and Pierre Kuentz the fascinating world of Space Art and, keeping faith with to the logic of popular science and multidisciplinary own Tablinum, it aims to create a stimulating encounter between art and science, from which can emerge an important opportunity for cultural enrichment for the public.

Ad Infinitum will take place at Officinacento5, in Viale Lecco 105 in Como, on Saturday, May 7 to Sunday, May 15, 2016.

Skyward will attend the opening evening by exposing the two missiles Rocksanne I-X launched in November 2013 and June 2014.

The exhibition is sponsored by the GAL (Lariani Amateur Astronomers Group) which will offer a projection program with digital planetarium, which allow the public to experience first hand the thrill of dive into the “theater of the cosmos“. A not to be missed show!

## The inheritance of EASM 2015

It’s been few weeks from the big event Skyward organized in the 2015: the European Aerospace Students Meeting (EASM 2015) for Experimental Rocketry.

After the amazing enthusiasm of the event to whom 6 international student rocketry teams participated (UKSEDS, WARR Rocketry Team, Tu Wien Space Team, ESO, Japan Rocketry Team, Warsaw Rocketry Group) with Skyward itself in addition, SGAC and SASA as support, that was dedicated to experimental rocketry made by student teams, we can firmly say that the european (and worlwide) scenario in this field is incredibly fervent and the convention has been a great chance of enrichment and discussion for all of the attendees.

The technological solutions and the research paths are somehow variegated but it’s still possible to underline common aspects:

• sounding rockets reusability
• solid or hybrid propulsion
• composites for structures
• fast prototyping

The setting up of a european competition could push more and more the research in this field, in general not so much investigated at the university, in an age that is going to see, in the next 20-30 years, incredible international missions out in the Solar System and a great increase of applications for the exploitment of the low Earth Orbit and the related technologies for the space access.

In the second day of the convention the participants have been able to attend interesting presentations from the industry sector, the innovative (italian!!) startups that are now commencing to face up the space industry and from the research world that enriched and enhanced the educational and instructive experience of EASM 2015.

# 1st European Experimental Rocketry Competition (Unofficial Name)

## General Rules

For what concerns the international competition, in the 22nd October the teams met at Campus In-Domus Monneret and they began to highlight the main features that the competition should have:

• An altitude limitation on the apogee (that will also influence the choice of the launch site) set up to 2017 m.
• The evaluation system will be enrolled with a score and a winner for each subsystem (propulsion, recovery, payload, etc…) and an overall winner that will be chosen for the best R&D, the best integration of all subsystems and the fullfilment of the mission objectives.
The evaluation of the work done on the subsystems will be given by a committee of experts recruited from companies in the sector that will score the project on the base of to-be-determined parameters like novelty, complexity, capability…
For example a homebuilt propulsion system is likely to be worth more than a commercial one.
• There will be a maximum number of launch attempts:
• 2 attempts from the launchpad, this means that in the case of a misfire a team would have another attempt for the ignition
• just one attempt once the rocket leaves the launch pad.
• Each team should provide its launch pad (or it should borrow it from the other teams)

## Organising Committee

In these weeks and in the next all the teams will notify about two members that will sit in the organising committee of the competition that is expected to publish the final revison of the rules within February 2016.

## Expected Times

The first edition of the competion is expected to take place in the 2017 since most of the teams already have running projects at the moment. 2017 is also an exciting space themed year (Sputnik 1 60th anniversary, Google Lunar landings and 100 years since the birth of Arthur C Clarke) with possibilities for outreach and advertising of the event.

## To be solved…

In the next months the organising committee will also face some important questions about the correct enrollment of the competition, with the hope to reach some help from national and international agencies, with specific attention to:

• identify a suitable launch site
• logistics of the purchase and transport of solid rocket motors.

## Some metrics…

EASM 2015 has been clearly an important event, one of the biggest aerospace-themed events ever organized by students in Italy.
The convention has been organized in all its parts completely by Skyward Experimental Rocketry, with about 80% of the funds spent coming from private sponsors and donors of the association (and the left 20% coming from the Politecnico di Milano money saved for cultural activities), offered for free to all the enthusiasts.

400 bookings on Eventbrite for the two days, peaks of more than 150 attendees, 22 different speakers from all over the world with a perfect logistics in spite of the work in progress for the next academic year inauguration.

A real team work that involved the association at first, than with the Politecnico staff and the department of Aerospace sciences and technologies for a final result that make us very proud.

What we realized, we believe, is a proof of how investing on the enthusiasm of young students like us would bring great success. We would like to fly high, quo neque aquilae audent, and with the hope of a collaboration more and more tight with all the stakeholders of the field (department, SpLab, italian and international rocketry associations, institutions that promote young space professionals and students etc…) we’re here testifying this amazing experience of EASM 2015.

## How to launch a sounding rocket in Italy

Very often, after heard what Skyward is, a lot of people ask us from where have we launched the Rocksanne I-X rocket, if we needed to ask for a permission to someone and how we did manage to obtain it. The following is a short article that contains all the answers.

By obvious reasons it is not possible to launch a rocket everywhere you prefer, so it is necessary to identify a suitable place, with determined characteristics.

The Skyward’s choice for the Rocksanne I-X launch was the Piano dell’Aremogna, a locality situated at 1400 above the sea level, within the Roccaraso municipality, province of Aquila, as the area is far enough away from population centers and it has a wide open space around the launch point.

Once an appropriate area was found, it is necessary to start asking permission from the Municipality, Brigade and the Forest Guard responsible for the interested area in order to close the access to the unauthorized persons.

To do so, an e-mail with the specific requests to the involved entities was enough, as in our case the question was facilitated by the fact that a Skyward member is a native of Roccaraso and he helped us to find the needed contacts.

In addition to the permissions from the institutions and local bodies the most important and indispensable is the NOTAM (Notice to Airmen).

The NOTAM is a list of activities related to the airspace that is used by the pilots of all types of aircraft and updated on the current activities nearby of a specific airport in order to perform the flights safely.

Demanding the NOTAM means to be included as an activity in this list, as a consequence you are authorized to temporarily close the assigned airspace in order to perform your activity.

The NOTAM has to be requested for any kind of activity that regards the airspace and that could become a potential danger for the air traffic, as for example the elevation of a dirigible, laser and light beams emission, fireworks or missile launch, like our R1X.

For R1X, the air navigation in the assigned area was closed up to about 3500 m of altitude, so in our case we did not have interfered with airliners but the closure was necessary for the security of all other types of aircraft, such as helicopters or military aircrafts performing exercises.

The bureaucratic process is not complicated and is explained in detail and clearly by circulars issued by ENAC available on the official website (ATM05A circular and its annexes).

Foresight not to be overlooked it is the timing, considering that you need at least three months to complete the bureaucratic process before the launch.

Once the launch site is chosen, you must then locate the airport of competence for authorization requests.The area we have chosen has proved to have as many as four airports nearby: two civilians (ACC ACC Brindisi and Rome) and two military (SSCAM SSCAM Brindisi and Rome).

To each of them you have to send by e-mail your request for the use of air space, which consists of a standardized form (Annex A of the circular ATM05A) that describes the type of activity that you need to perform, the take-off and landing location, both identified by geographic coordinates, the airspace identification data, expressed by altitude and lateral limits, the start and end time of the activity and other more detailed information.

Once completed and signed by the applicant, in our case the Skyward President, the form is sent to each of the competent airports and an answer is expected, hoping for a positive outcome.

The received answers have had a positive outcome, but at the first launch, in November 2013, before the final go, the airports have contacted us by phone for more information. In facts, the word “launch of two experimental missiles” as a description of the activity aroused a mix of perplexity and curiosity.

It is nice to remember that the tones have always been friendly, above all, interested in our project and there was no intention from the airports interfering with our work.

At the second launch, instead, our “reputation” has preceded us and everything went faster from the bureaucratic point of view.

All permits obtained should be sent to the Civil Aviation Authority for the final issuance of the NOTAM that will be published online on the website directly.

The list of issued NOTAMs is not updated frequently and it can be anxious to check every day if your asset is included in the list before the launch date.

It has to be reported, in order to avoid too many anxieties and spend entire afternoons to update the ENAC web site, which is notified by e-mail of the publication of NOTAM.

At this point it becomes official that the airspace is available on the dates and times required.

For the both lauches of R I-X, a further request has been made to us by the SSCAM airports of Brindisi and Rome, that is to notify them by telephone before and after launch, in order for them to be informed in real time of the flight activity.

Finally, if you’ve come this far you only have to… launch your missile!

## R1X’s electronic systems

The design and development of the Rocksanne I-X’s electronic systems has been tough and amusing.

All the hardware has been designed and optimized in-house to manage the ignition (whose subsystem has the amazing misfire percentage of 0% for all the tests and launches), the data logging before, during and after the launch thanks to a full-duplex communication between the cylindrical antenna and the ground station and for the parachute opening and release via algorithms we developed by our own.

Results have been very satisfying, fulfilling the targets as reliability, security and low cost we wanted to. You can find all the details in the attached report and in the video briefing. Don’t forget also to check our Github repository!

## European Aerospace Students Meeting

In October you can’t miss the European Aerospace Students Meeting (EASM) for experimental rocketry the 22nd and 23rd October, at Politecnico di Milano

EASM 2015 is an event entirely dedicated to experimental rocketry with the ultimate goal of setting up a rocketry competition; there will be members from most famous student associations all over Europe that will present their programs, experts from start-ups and industry worlds that will offer an overview on the future of aerospace sector and best researches carried on in Europe.

There will be also the chance for us to be protagonist! We’re presenting a new development program named Cyrano Program that will enrich Skyward’s experience with a more aeronautics-focused project… without forgetting about missiles!
We will also announce a new rocket launch for the 2016 and we will explain more about Rocksanne 2X hybrid motor which you will have the possiblity of choosing the name of.

There will be also two dissertations about the Philae’s adventure and much more!

## Graduation day and “Magni” prize 2015

Every year the graduation day of July is a great chance of intense emotions, pride and joy above all.
A member of Skyward, Marco Marani, successfully graduated in Aeornautics Engineering to Politecnico di Milano. We’re sure that passion and effort that he gifted to the association’s activity will be a launchpad for his future!

In this great day, other skywarders received the graduation prize F. Magni: a prestigious acknowledgment for the activities we do out of university. This important prize has been created by Federico’s family, in memory of their son, prematurely deceased. He was registered as student at Politecnico di Milano and he was attending Aerospace Engineering, he was also a strong flight and space passionate.

We’re really thankful for this great honor and we hope to bring it higher and higher, skyward.

## Preview of “Apollo XIII” to Poligames

Thanks to Terna colleagues, Skyward is going to Poligames, the great event organized by students for students that keep place in PoliMi every year.

Terna Poligames, at its ninth edition, it’s the first sports tournament of its kind in PoliMi: free and open to every student. Teams composed by 3 members, guys and girls together, will challenge in soccer, basketball and volley fields that will be installed inside the La Masa campus.

Talking about games we’re going to preview Apollo XIII, a card-driven game that follows the events of the famous mission.

## Rocksanne I-X debriefing for Mission Analysis activities

Hello everyone,

as promised we’re publishig the final report for the Mission Analysis activities done during the design and development of the Rocksanne I-X sounding rocket. Activity focused mainly on the coding of routines for the prediction of the trajectory achieved with the modeling of the ascent and descent phases. Everything got with the use of Missile Datcom v.97, used for the estimation of the aerodynamics and stability properties.
