R1X’s electronic systems

The design and development of the Rocksanne I-X’s electronic systems has been tough and amusing.

All the hardware has been designed and optimized in-house to manage the ignition (whose subsystem has the amazing misfire percentage of 0% for all the tests and launches), the data logging before, during and after the launch thanks to a full-duplex communication between the cylindrical antenna and the ground station and for the parachute opening and release via algorithms we developed by our own.

Results have been very satisfying, fulfilling the targets as reliability, security and low cost we wanted to. You can find all the details in the attached report and in the video briefing. Don’t forget also to check our Github repository!

European Aerospace Students Meeting

In October you can’t miss the European Aerospace Students Meeting (EASM) for experimental rocketry the 22nd and 23rd October, at Politecnico di Milano

EASM 2015 is an event entirely dedicated to experimental rocketry with the ultimate goal of setting up a rocketry competition; there will be members from most famous student associations all over Europe that will present their programs, experts from start-ups and industry worlds that will offer an overview on the future of aerospace sector and best researches carried on in Europe.

There will be also the chance for us to be protagonist! We’re presenting a new development program named Cyrano Program that will enrich Skyward’s experience with a more aeronautics-focused project… without forgetting about missiles!
We will also announce a new rocket launch for the 2016 and we will explain more about Rocksanne 2X hybrid motor which you will have the possiblity of choosing the name of.

There will be also two dissertations about the Philae’s adventure and much more!

Rocksanne I-X debriefing for Mission Analysis activities

Hello everyone,

as promised we’re publishig the final report for the Mission Analysis activities done during the design and development of the Rocksanne I-X sounding rocket. Activity focused mainly on the coding of routines for the prediction of the trajectory achieved with the modeling of the ascent and descent phases. Everything got with the use of Missile Datcom v.97, used for the estimation of the aerodynamics and stability properties.

Test-drive of the Rocksanne IX parachute

During the previous  days of the June 2014 launch of Rocksanne I-X, the Recovery Systems team has worked continuously with the aim to check all the changes and updates made on the parachute’s expulsion and tripping system in order to resolve the problem that we had encountered during the November’s  2013 launch of R-IX.

The main purpose was to verify the materials’ (used to release the parachute) resistance. The collected data was analysed totally in the C1 experimental laboratories of Politecnico di Milano University.

Particularly the Young’s modulus was researched, the stress and elongation at break of the following types of samples: the first one, realised in kevlar, used in the configuration to realize the lines of the main parachute (main); the second, realized with tubular nylon, mainly used to build the shock cord; the last, realized in nylon tube, in the configuration of connection between the bag containing the main parachute and drogue parachute.

The results obtained, as expected, brought out the mechanical properties of the expected loads in the launch phase with a sufficient safety margin. Below you can see a table with the data obtained from the tests.

Rocksanne I-X is flying again!

Dear followers, brace yourself, we have some amazing news! Rocksanne IX is flying again! On the 7th and 8th of June we will be travelling to Roccaraso (AQ) again to launch an improved version of Rocksanne IX, hoping for a milder weather then last time (cross the fingers for us). The rocket will be powered by Lilith (our engine, which is a woman of course) which will allow us to reach the target altitude of 1000m.
